FIRE PROTECTION · E-MOBILITYFingerhuth EV Car Fire Blankets for Electric Vehicles
S-TYPE EV Car Fire Blanket – professional fire containment for electric vehicle fires, tested to DIN SPEC 91489.
FIRE CONTAINMENT FOR EV BATTERY FIRES
When an EV battery catches fire, the vehicle is not the only thing at risk.
During a thermal runaway, lithium-ion batteries can release enormous amounts of heat, flames and hot reaction gases within a very short time. In car parks, workshops, on ferries or in densely occupied parking areas in particular, this creates a risk of severe thermal exposure to adjacent vehicles and the immediate surroundings.
This is where EV car fire blankets and fire containment blankets come into play: they create a defined fire containment zone around the affected electric vehicle, limit the spread of flames and reduce thermal exposure to the surroundings. This helps contain the immediate hazard area and can provide valuable time and additional space for evacuation and emergency response measures.
The battery fire is not “smothered” by the blanket – the focus is on fire containment, protection of the surroundings and a more controlled approach to the fire incident.
S-TYPE · FIRE CONTAINMENT FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Engineered for the extreme demands of electric vehicle fires
The S-TYPE EV Car Fire Blanket has been specifically engineered for the high thermal loads associated with electric vehicle fires. A thermal runaway of the traction battery in particular can generate extreme temperatures and intense flames.
The combination of high-temperature-resistant silica fabric and a double-sided mineral vermiculite coating provides substantial thermal reserves for fire containment around the vehicle, with continuous temperature resistance up to 1,200 °C and short-term peak exposure up to 1,600 °C.
The open-pore material structure allows smoke, pyrolysis and reaction gases to pass through the fabric, thereby reducing the risk of a critical accumulation of combustible pyrolysis gases underneath the fire containment blanket.
At the same time, the S-TYPE is water-permeable, allowing the supplementary use of firefighting or sprinkler water for cooling the fire blanket, accessible vehicle surfaces and the immediate surroundings.
The S-TYPE therefore combines high thermal resistance with the specific requirements of fire containment during electric vehicle fires.
HOW IT WORKS · S-TYPE EV CAR FIRE BLANKET
Open-pore material structure for effective gas management
An electric vehicle fire generates not only high temperatures and flames, but also large quantities of smoke, pyrolysis and reaction gases. The open-pore fabric structure of the S-TYPE allows these gases to escape through the surface of the fire containment blanket.
Gas permeability is an inherent design characteristic of the high-temperature fabric used. Gases can pass through the fabric structure, reducing the risk of a critical accumulation of combustible pyrolysis gases underneath the fire containment blanket.
At the same time, the design counteracts excessive inflation of the blanket caused by hot gases accumulating underneath it. This phenomenon, known as the “ballooning effect”, is reduced by gas passage across the blanket surface, helping the fire containment blanket remain as close to the vehicle as possible during the fire incident.
Tested safety for electric vehicle fire containment
For professional use with electric vehicles, fire containment blankets must provide far more than high temperature resistance. The Fingerhuth S-TYPE EV Car Fire Blanket has been tested for relevant safety-related properties and meets the requirements of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 for fire containment blankets used with electric vehicles.

The right EV car fire blanket for different vehicle sizes
The S-TYPE EV Car Fire Blanket is available in several standard sizes for different vehicle classes. For standard passenger cars and electric vehicles, we generally recommend the 6 x 8 m size. Larger versions are available for SUVs, vans and commercial vehicles.

The optimum size depends on the vehicle dimensions, vehicle class and local operating conditions. Special sizes and customised versions can be manufactured on request.
The right deployment solution is part of the fire blanket system
The S-TYPE EV Car Fire Blanket is supplied with a suitable deployment solution. Depending on the operational concept, you can choose between the mobile Trolley XL and the compact PVC deployment bag. For stationary storage of the PVC deployment bag, a wall cabinet is also available as an optional addition.

Fire containment under realistic operating conditions
The following footage shows fire containment blankets in practical use during realistic vehicle fire scenarios. It demonstrates deployment on a burning vehicle and shows how flames and thermal exposure can be spatially contained while smoke, pyrolysis and reaction gases are able to escape through the open-pore material structure.
EV Car Fire Blanket in a realistic vehicle fire scenario
Realistic fire demonstration involving a burning vehicle with additional lithium-ion battery modules. Two firefighters pull the fire containment blanket over the vehicle during an advanced stage of the fire. The footage demonstrates the operating principle of the S-TYPE described above: flames and thermal exposure are spatially contained while smoke, pyrolysis and reaction gases can continue to escape through the open-pore material structure across the blanket surface.
Fire containment blanket during an advanced full vehicle fire
The footage shows the deployment of a fire containment blanket during firefighter training on a vehicle already in a fully developed fire. Once the vehicle is completely covered, the open fire can be seen becoming spatially contained within a short period of time, while visible flames outside the blanket are significantly reduced. The scenario therefore illustrates the immediate effect of the fire containment blanket on flame spread and thermal exposure to the surrounding area.
For rapid and controlled deployment on electric vehicles
The S-TYPE EV Car Fire Blanket is designed for rapid fire containment during electric vehicle fires. It must be deployed exclusively by appropriately trained and authorised personnel and by fire and rescue services. The basic deployment principle follows a clear sequence: prepare, position, pull the blanket completely over the vehicle and contain the fire area from the surroundings.
Position
Remove the fire containment blanket from the trolley or PVC deployment bag and place it centrally in front of or behind the vehicle. The red pull handles should face the vehicle.
Unroll
Unroll the fire containment blanket completely across its full width.
Cover the vehicle
Using the red pull handles, two people should pull the fire containment blanket in a controlled manner over the affected electric vehicle and lower it completely to the ground.
Position closely
Check that the blanket lies closely around the vehicle and reaches the ground on all sides. The centre markings make alignment and readjustment easier.
EV car fire blankets and fire containment blankets may only be deployed by appropriately trained and authorised personnel and by fire and rescue services. The steps shown are intended solely as a schematic representation of the basic deployment principle and do not replace an application-specific risk assessment, training or product-specific operating and deployment instructions.
