CUSTOM PIPE INSULATION · CONTINUOUS THERMAL PROTECTION

Custom insulation for piping and complex piping geometries

Industrial piping systems rarely consist of straight pipe runs alone. Elbows, tees, branches, reducers, flanges and valves create geometrically complex areas where continuous thermal insulation is particularly important.

Fingerhuth develops and manufactures custom removable pipe insulation and textile insulation covers for these applications. Each insulation element is engineered according to pipe diameter, geometry, operating temperature, insulation target and installation conditions and can be combined into a continuous modular insulation system.

Straight pipe sections can be insulated just as precisely as 45° and 90° pipe elbows, custom bends, tees, reducers, flange connections, valves and other piping components.

The textile construction provides removable and reusable insulation. Maintenance, inspection and connection points therefore remain accessible without permanently removing or destroying the entire insulation system.

Depending on the material construction and application, custom solutions can be engineered for temperature exposure up to 1200 °C.

STRAIGHT PIPE · ELBOW · TEE · REDUCER

One piping system – one continuous insulation concept

Thermal insulation of a piping system is most effective when its geometrically complex components are also included. We therefore consider not only the individual pipe section, but the complete routing of the piping system.

Custom insulation covers can be produced for straight pipe sections. Changes in direction can be continued with specially engineered pipe elbow and bend insulation. Branches can be fitted with correspondingly shaped insulation elements for tees and other connecting components.

Reducers, transitions, pipe couplings and custom fittings can also be incorporated into the system. This makes it possible to reduce thermal weak points at transitions and complex geometries.

The individual elements can be coordinated to create a modular and removable insulation system along the entire piping arrangement.

HEAT LOSS · SURFACE TEMPERATURE · PERSONNEL PROTECTION

Reduce heat loss and shield hot surfaces

Hot piping continuously releases heat to the surrounding environment. Uninsulated elbows, flanges, valves and connecting components can create additional thermal weak points within the system.

Continuous industrial pipe insulation can reduce heat loss to the surrounding environment and help retain process heat within the piping system.

At the same time, the accessible surface temperature of the insulation can be significantly lower than that of the uninsulated hot pipe. Depending on the design, this can also improve personnel protection and protection against accidental contact with hot surfaces.

Insulation material, insulation thickness and outer layer are selected according to operating temperature, required insulation performance and environmental conditions.

DIAMETER · TEMPERATURE · GEOMETRY · INSULATION TARGET · ENVIRONMENT

The right pipe insulation starts with the operating conditions

Technical pipe insulation is not selected solely according to pipe diameter. The decisive factors are the interaction between operating temperature, pipe geometry, required insulation performance, environmental conditions and maintenance requirements. We also consider available installation space, adjacent components, mechanical loads, moisture and, where applicable, exposure to oils or chemicals. For elbows, tees, flanges and valves, segment divisions, overlaps and fastening systems are adapted to the individual installation conditions.

The design can be based on 2D or 3D drawings, CAD data, piping plans, hand sketches, photographs, sample components or directly recorded measurements.

PROJECT REVIEW · DRAWING · DIMENSIONS · SAMPLE

What information do we need for your pipe insulation?

Complete CAD data is not necessarily required for an initial technical assessment. In many cases, photographs, pipe diameters, dimensions and a simple sketch of the piping arrangement are sufficient. Particularly useful are details regarding pipe diameter, operating and peak temperature, process medium, required insulation performance, available installation space and environmental conditions.

For fittings, we also require the relevant geometry – for example the angle and radius of a pipe elbow, dimensions of a tee or the connection dimensions of flanges and valves. Maintenance points, measuring points, sensors, actuators, pipe supports and other areas that must remain accessible should also be identified.

For larger piping systems, the insulation can be divided into clearly defined and labelled individual segments. This creates a complete insulation system designed for efficient installation, maintenance and reassembly.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE · INDUSTRIAL PIPE INSULATION

Why should pipe elbows, flanges and valves also be insulated?

From a thermal perspective, a piping system consists of more than its straight sections. If elbows, flanges, branches or valves remain uninsulated, the otherwise continuous thermal insulation is interrupted at these points. Complex piping components have more demanding geometries than straight pipe runs. Custom-fit insulation for fittings makes it possible to include these components in the overall thermal insulation concept.

The advantage of textile constructions is their flexibility: straight sections, pipe elbows, tees, flanges and valves can each be manufactured as separate, coordinated and removable insulation elements.

PIPE INSULATION · HOSE INSULATION · CUSTOM DESIGN

Pipe insulation or hose insulation – what is the difference?

Pipe insulation is engineered for a largely defined piping geometry. In addition to straight pipe sections, this includes elbows, tees, reducers, flanges and valves. Hose insulation, by contrast, is designed for flexible hoses and lines. Depending on the application, the insulation must accommodate not only the thermal load but also the required movement and flexibility of the hose.

In both cases, the design is customised according to dimensions, temperature and operating conditions. This makes it possible to insulate individual sections as well as complete industrial piping and hose systems.

EXISTING SYSTEMS · RETROFIT · CUSTOM GEOMETRIES

Custom pipe insulation for existing industrial systems

Removable textile insulation systems are not limited to new piping installations. Existing piping can also be retrofitted with custom-manufactured insulation elements. In existing plants, pipe routing is often influenced by adjacent machinery, supports, measuring points or structural restrictions. These conditions can be taken into account during the engineering process.

Based on drawings, photographs, existing insulation samples or recorded dimensions, we can manufacture both individual replacement insulation covers and complete insulated piping sections.
