FIRE CONTAINMENT FOR BATTERY FIRES IN INTRALOGISTICS

When a lithium-ion forklift catches fire, the surrounding area can quickly be affected.

Lithium-ion-powered forklifts, industrial trucks, pallet trucks, stackers, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile systems have become an integral part of modern production and intralogistics. If a thermal runaway occurs within the traction battery, extreme temperatures, intense flames and large volumes of hot reaction gases can develop within a very short time.

Warehouses, production facilities and logistics areas often contain other vehicles, machinery, racking systems, goods or building structures in close proximity. A fire containment blanket for forklifts and industrial trucks creates a defined containment zone around the affected vehicle, limits the spread of flames and reduces thermal exposure to the surrounding area.

The primary objective is explicitly not to “smother” the battery fire, but to provide fire containment, protection of the surrounding area and spatial control of the fire event until further measures can be initiated.

Engineered for high thermal loads from industrial lithium-ion vehicles

The S-TYPE fire containment blanket for industrial trucks has been developed for the specific challenges associated with fires involving forklifts, industrial trucks and other electrically powered industrial vehicles. In intralogistics in particular, lithium-ion traction batteries can generate extremely high temperatures and intense flames in the event of a failure.

The high-temperature material consists of silica fabric with a mineral vermiculite coating on both sides. It provides continuous temperature resistance up to 1,200 °C and short-term peak resistance up to 1,600 °C.

The open-pore material structure allows smoke, pyrolysis and reaction gases to pass through the fabric, thereby reducing the risk of a critical accumulation of combustible gases beneath the fire containment blanket.

At the same time, the S-TYPE material is water-permeable, allowing supplementary use of extinguishing or sprinkler water for cooling the blanket, accessible vehicle surfaces and the immediate surroundings.

The S-TYPE therefore combines high thermal resistance with the requirements of professional fire containment for lithium-ion forklifts and industrial trucks.

Open-pore material structure for controlled gas management

During a battery fire involving a forklift or industrial truck, large volumes of smoke, pyrolysis and reaction gases are generated in addition to high temperatures and flames. The open-pore fabric structure of the S-TYPE allows these gases to escape through the surface of the fire containment blanket.

Gas permeability is an inherent design characteristic of the high-temperature fabric. Gases can pass through the fabric structure, reducing the risk of a critical accumulation of combustible pyrolysis gases beneath the fire containment blanket.

At the same time, this counteracts excessive inflation of the blanket caused by hot gases accumulating underneath it. This so-called ballooning effect is reduced by gas passage across the blanket surface, helping the fire containment blanket remain as close to the vehicle as possible during the fire event.
